Golf Review of 1948 Prospects for a very successful season in 1949 were quite noticeable to Rev. Father Kamerick as nine letter men returned from the 1948 golf squad that won 6 out of 8 matches and captured the Iowa Conference golf title, besides finishing second in the Midlands Conference and second in the Iowa State Golf Tournament held at Ames, Iowa. The 1948 St. Ambrose medalists lost their only two decisions to Iowa U. and Loras, both home on the Ames golf links, took top honors with the St. Ambrose link stars winning second place. Top men for the Bees during the season were Bob Link, Davenport, Iowa; Tony Esposito, East Moline, Ill.; Bill Olson, Rock Island, Ill; Bernie Steiner, East Moline, Ill.; Bob Duncan, Rock Island, Ill.; Jim Fahrner, Davenport, Iowa; Larry Etzkorn, Kirkwood, Missouri; Harry Achim, Aurora, Ill; Jack Engler, Beloit, Wisconsin, and Al DeDoncker, Geneseo, Ill. DeDoncker 1948 St. Ambrose Golf Squad by very narrow margins. The wins were scored over Bradley (2), Western Ill. State (2), Coe (1), and Loras (1). The golfer's captured the Iowa Conference title for the second consecutive year by nosing out their traditional up-river rival, Loras. Loras came back in the Midlands Tournament to narrowly squeeze by the Bees to capture the first Midlands Golf Meet. The Iowa State Golf Tournament included all the collegiate golf teams in Iowa and was held at Ames, Iowa. Iowa State, which is at was the only man lost through graduation in 1948. Bill Olson is leading the 1949 St. Ambrose golf team with his election by teammates to be Captain for the season. The toughest schedule in the history of the golf squad will be faced by Father Kamerick's squad with Bradley, Western Ill., Loras, Marquette, and Notre Dame listed as opponents. Other schools are tentatively scheduled with two tournaments on the present schedule.
